Carey McWilliams was born December 13, 1905 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. He completed his Juris Doctorate from the University of Southern California in 1927. From 1927-1938, McWilliams was an attorney at the law firm Black, Hammack in Los Angeles. In 1938, he was appointed as Chief of the Division of Immigration and Housing of the State of California, a position he kept until 1942. Frank Rowe was a first-year art teacher when, along with a small group of colleagues, he was fired by San Francisco State College in 1950 for refusing to sign California's new anti-communist loyalty oath, the Levering Act. Rowe was barred from teaching from 1950 until the California Supreme Court overturned the oath in 1967. His book The Enemy Among Us: A Story of Witch-hunting in the McCarthy Era was published in 1980. Rowe also taught at Laney College in Oakland, Calif. Frank Rowe died in 1985...
